TransMatria VR

Idea, choreography, dance: Rocio Marano

VR Coding: Lisa Kaschubat

3D Design: Carolina Ovando

TransMatria VR is part of a multilayered piece including several performances taking place in both virtual and physical space. In this way, the project creates a link between the two geographical locations and artists based in Argentina  and Berlin.

The shown VR world is based on the Wallmapu Desert in the western part of Argentina mixed with documentary footage taken on the actual location.

The Wallmapu Desert is charged with colonial history and is also the place where Malambo Dance comes from and until today one of the biggest place of oil extraction.

Inspired by the manifesto of Latinofuturism, Transmatria reveals itself as a trans-spatial-temporal and trans-disciplinary project. Dissident gauche artists from Argentina and dancers from Berlin come into contact through VR. Their performances have been filmed with 360° cameras. The shootings lead us to interact with a 3D replica of the Wallmapu desert in a format between performance and documentary, where Rocio travelled and trained in the only Malambo school or Argentina by Rulo Emanuel Hernández. The school is located in Cutral Co, a city characterized by political struggles against oil extractives.

by ROCIO MARANO

Rocío Marano deepens the line of research on Malambo, the traditional dance of the gauchos of Argentina, which she had already begun in December 2021 with her piece Matria. On this occasion, five malambo apprentices immerse themselves in an exchange with a specialist in the discipline, and approach the rhythms of zapateos, Bombo Legüero and Boleadoras, at a crossroads between contemporary and traditional dance. The dialogue extends to ways of perceiving folklore that go beyond its colonial patriarchal traits and move away from Western aesthetics.
Inspired by the manifesto of Latinofuturism, Transmatria reveals itself as a trans-spatial-temporal and trans-disciplinary project. Dissident gaucho artists from Argentina and dancers from Berlin come into contact in a VR exhibition of three videos filmed with 360 cameras. The shootings lead us to interact with a 3D replica of the Wallmapu deserts in a format between performance and documentary. That is where Rocio travelled and trained in the only Malambo school of Argentina by Rulo Emanuel Hernández, Argentine champion of the discipline in 2017. The school is located in Cutral Co, a city characterized by political struggles against oil extractivism.
